Have you ever wondered what is like to go for a counseling session?
No, it is nothing like going for therapy with a psychologist. They will understand more about mental illness. It is also nothing like going to a psychiatrist, they prescribe medication.
A counselor, help you with your daily concerns. Do you feel like you're down in the dump? Did you just break up with your partner? You are overwhelmed with stress? You felt like no one would listen? Well, the counselor listens and we would not judge (it is ethically wrong).
All they have in common is that a psychiatrist, psychologist, and counselor would keep your concerns and troubles confidential.
Counselling also takes time. The phrase "we are our biggest critics" is not something we throw around to scare people. It is because our minds are so complex that just like healing a broken leg takes time, healing our mind takes as much time if not more. Not only that, we are constantly faced with challenges that come in all shapes and forms. These transitional periods of our lives make it that much more important to understand that it is a process that takes time.
Counselors are not entitled to give advice. Here's why, we GUIDE you to make your own decisions, only you know your life, why would you take advice from someone who only knows what you tell them? We just merely help you explore your choices and suggest the possibilities that are in your best interest as our clients.
The therapeutic relationship between the counselor and client is professional. Within therapeutic relationships, clients usually express themselves honestly and openly, without any immediate attachment or fear of judgment or rejection.
The client or therapeutic relationship is often different from any other, because of this.
Asking questions and giving feedback are important in this process as we learn about ourselves, our talents, skills, and traits through receiving comments from others. Constructive feedback raises self-awareness and expands possibilities. This way both parties can grow and learn to ensure the entire process is pleasant and improving.
Takes time to find the right counselor or therapist. Finding a counselor or therapist with whom you feel compatible, has a sense of ease, and who provides the kind of support, tools, listening, and guidance you need takes time and patience but the payoff is enormous. Counselors are trained in the key principles of non-judgmental listening, some of the core principles relating to core believe like empathy, honesty, and acceptance. Counselors or therapists can fully understand the client without being distracted by their thoughts and experiences. If the clients feel safe in their environment, they are more likely to speak openly and feel more comfortable. By allowing clients to speak without interruption, they can work through and understand their situation more quickly.
