Choosing a career or educational course that fits your personality is an important step toward career happiness and job satisfaction. You want to respond affirmatively to the question, "Do you like what you do every day?" It is critical to your professional success. The Holland theory is a very well and investigated theory on the subject. Holland's theory has 6 different personality traits, some of them are realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional.



The realistic personality type's interest area is typically expressed in the form of mostly with their hands, such as creating, mending, assembling, or building something, as well as managing and operating equipment, tools, or machinery. Creating, building, fixing, maintaining, working manually, measuring, working in detail, driving, transporting, caring for animals, and dealing with plants are all examples of tasks that need the use of tools, equipment, and machinery. Jobs that individuals with the realistic personality trait would include, pilot, farmer, builder, engineer, armed services personnel, mechanic, upholsterer, electrician, computer technologist, park ranger, sportsperson.

As for the investigative personality trait, these individuals like to come up with new ideas and explore them, as well as observe, analyze, and experiment, as well as ask questions and solve difficulties. They are into developing, articulating, calculating, diagnosing, experimenting, and exploring as these are all skills that are required to think analytically and logically. Some occupations that individuals with investigative traits go into are are science, research, medical and health occupations, chemist, marine scientist, forestry technician, medical or agricultural laboratory technician, zoologist, dentist, and doctor.

The artistic personality trait likes speaking, performing, or expressing oneself through words, art, music, or drama, as well as build and designing things. Speaking, writing, singing, acting, creating, presenting, planning, composing, playing, and dancing are some examples of ways to express yourself creatively or physically. Some professions with artistic elements are artist, illustrator, photographer, songwriter, composer, singer, instrument player, dancer, actor, reporter, writer, editor, advertiser, hairdresser, fashion designer.

The social personality trait on the other hand is are individuals who like to work with people to teach, train and inform, help, treat, heal and cure, serve and greet, concerned for the wellbeing and welfare of others. Oral and written communication, caring and supporting, training, meeting, greeting, assisting, teaching, informing, interviewing, coaching are some skills the social personality traits inhabit or tend to be interested in learning. Occupations that this personality trait tends to lean towards are English, social studies, math, science, health, physical education, art, computing, business studies, languages.

As for the enterprising personality trait, individuals that possess this trait like meeting people enjoy leading, talking, and influencing others or encouraging. They also typically enjoy working in the business. Selling, promoting and persuading, developing ideas, public speaking, managing, organizing, leading and captaining, computing, planning are some of the skills individuals with this personality trait have or tend to be interested to learn. Some of the jobs that individuals with this personality trait have are salesperson, lawyer, politician, accountant, business owner, executive or manager, travel agent, music or sports promoter.

Lastly is the conventional personality trait. Individuals with this enjoy working indoors and at tasks that involve organizing and being accurate, following procedures, working with data or numbers, planning work and events. Computing and keyboarding, recording and keeping records, paying attention to detail, meeting and greeting, doing calculations, handling money, organizing, arranging, working independently are some of the skills that individuals with this trait have.

This theory has six basic types of work environments that correlate directly with personality types. Holland's Work Environment theory emphasizes that those who choose to work in an environment that suits their personality type are more likely to succeed and be satisfied. This idea is important because it shows that this theory is flexible and can incorporate combination types.
